In commemoration of Earth Day, the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences (IAAS) LC Universitas Padjadjaran organized Earth Day 2026 on April 25, 2026, in the Kiarapayung area and the Universitas Padjadjaran Jatinangor campus environment, West Java. The activity was attended by more than 50 students, with a total of 60 tree seedlings planted as a tangible contribution to environmental conservation in an area covering approximately 2.47 hectares.

Carrying an educational concept, Earth Day 2026 focused not only on tree-planting activities but also on providing an understanding of plant morphology and the ecological functions of various tree species. This educational session was delivered by Arif Affan Wicaksono, S.P., M.Agr., a lecturer from the Department of Agricultural Cultivation, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran, who explained the importance of selecting plant species according to land conditions and purposes, considering the existing misconceptions in planting practices.

Participants received explanations regarding the differences in characteristics between timber trees and fruit trees, as well as their respective roles in supporting ecosystem balance. Through this activity, students are expected to become agents of change who not only care about the environment but also possess comprehensive knowledge and understanding of environmental management.

The selection of the Kiarapayung area was based on its open landscape characteristics and partially sloping terrain, which requires vegetation to maintain soil stability and improve water absorption capacity. Meanwhile, tree planting in the Ciparanje area was carried out as part of campus greening efforts while supporting Universitas Padjadjaran’s commitment to developing a sustainable campus. The activity was supported by Kusnahadi Susanto, M.T., Ph.D., Head of the Center for Sustainable Campus Development and Environmental Safety and Security at Universitas Padjadjaran.

In its implementation, IAAS LC Unpad collaborated with UPTD SPTH of the West Java Provincial Forestry Service in providing tree seedlings, including avocado, guava, and rasamala, which possess both ecological and economic value. These plant species are expected to provide long-term benefits for the environment and surrounding communities.

The Project Officer of Earth Day 2026, Trisha, stated that this activity represents both an expression of environmental concern and an educational effort for students. “This activity is not only a commemoration of Earth Day but also a tangible effort to improve students’ understanding of the importance of tree diversity and its role in maintaining environmental balance,” she explained.

Furthermore, representatives from UPTD SPTH West Java appreciated the collaboration with students in supporting environmental greening initiatives. “Collaborations like this serve as an important step in maintaining environmental sustainability, especially in the Kiarapayung area, which plays a strategic role as a conservation area,” the representative stated.

Moving forward, this activity is expected to become an initial step toward sustainable efforts to rehabilitate the Kiarapayung area while strengthening the role of students in preserving the environment. Through the spirit of collaboration and environmental awareness, IAAS LC Unpad is committed to continuously creating impactful programs that benefit both the environment and society.
